Handicapping 101 with Bob Roberts
Event Date:
Tue, August 5, 2025, 2:00pm to 4:00pm
If you're attending the Cuyahoga County Harness Races on Tuesday, August 5th, be sure to visit with MGM Northfield Park's Bob Roberts from 2:00PM-4:00PM at the Grandstand for Handicapping 101, in which Bob will offer insights on how to read a race program, while providing pari-mutuel wagering tips.
Bob Roberts is a native Clevelander who grew up in Willowick. He knew he wanted to be a sportswriter when his father took him to an Indians game and he asked who those guys were typing on a countertop behind home plate in the upper deck of old Municipal Stadium.

"They're sportswriters," said his dad. "That's their job."
Roberts began his career at the Mentor Morning Monitor before heading over to The Willoughby/Lake County News-Herald where he was named sports editor in 1970 at the age of 22. Roberts was hired by The Cleveland Press in 1973 and returned to The News-Herald when the Press folded in 1982. The Cleveland Plain Dealer hired Bob in 1985 and he remained there for over 20 years before accepting a buyout in 2006.
Roberts has won numerous awards. They include best harness story in North America, best Preakness story, a Golden Quill for feature writing in western Pennsylvania, and more than 10 state-wide writing awards in Ohio.

Draft Horse Pull
Event Date:
Wed, August 6, 2025, 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Cost: FREE!
Weighing in at roughly 2,000 lbs, draft horses are the gentle giants of the equine world. And talk about horsepower! Capable of pulling 2-3 times their own weight, draft horses are renowned for their incredible strength. Breeds include Belgians, Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires, and Suffolks, with the largest among them being the Belgians, which can stand up to 6'8" tall at the withers, though the average height among draft horses is around 5'4". Their partnership with humans has been instrumental in fields as wide ranging as agriculture and urban construction. They've hauled our wagons, plows, felled trees, building materials, artillery and heavy freight... and all for a few buckets of oats and bales of hay.
On Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the immense strength of these awesome creatures will be on full display at our annual Draft Horse Pull, so be sure to stop by and cheer on these magnificent beasts!

Dairy Goat Judging
Event Date:
Thu, August 7, 2025, 12:00pm to 2:00pm
Watch your shorts and camera straps. Goats will nibble on anything. Loved for their curiosity and mischievous playfulness, goats are also responsible for some delicious dairy products... from milk to cheeses and more. Fun fact: The etymology of the phrase "to get someone's goat" is purportedly derived from the practice of putting goats in the stalls of thoroughbreds to calm their nerves before a race. A sneaky rival would "get the goat" (i.e. remove it from the stall), agitating the horse, and hurting his odds of winning. So if you've been racing around all day, and the nerves are a bit frayed, stop by the Sheep Barn and hang out with the goats for a while. They'll be sure to make you smile.
